Sending the Application
All applications to name lanes are considered by the City Surveyor. Your application should include:

The proposed name
The precise location of the lane
A brief but complete history of the name you've chosen
The signatures and addresses of your neighbours

All applications should be addressed to the City Surveyor and your councillor.

After the request is sent, the City Surveyor will pass on the information to the relevant organizations, including neighbourhood associations, historic preservation societies, community council and residents. This process will take at least four weeks.

Here is a sample request:

To Whom it May Concern:

We hereby request that the lane which lies west of Bathurst St. and east of Markham St. from Bloor to College be named SHEARD LANE. This was the name of the former Mayor of Toronto Joseph Sheard, who honourably refused to build gallows to hang the instigators of the Mackenzie rebellion of 1837.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned, 15 March 2006.
