New York City Pillow Fight 2008 *third annual*
Saturday, March 22nd 2008 in Union Square at 3:00 PM

A massive pillow fight in New York City! Feathers fly and teddies soar as we gather for a massive urban pillow fight! Swing and whack as you evade pillow-wielding assailants. Bring a pillow to Union Square and wait for the signal. Pillow fight!

This year's pillow fight is timed to coincide with pillow fights in cities all over the world. Learn more about World Pillow Fight Day and Newmindspace.

The Rules

Soft pillows only
! + Swing lightly, many people will be swinging at once. + Do not swing at people without pillows or with cameras. + Remove glasses beforehand! + The event is FREE and appropriate for ALL AGES. Wait until 3:00 to begin. + This event is more fun with feathers!

Costumes and funky pillows encouraged :)

The Cleanup Effort: Volunteers Needed!

This year's goal is to clean up most of the feathers left behind, and 100% of the litter. If you would like to help clean up, please bring some trash bags :) We will distribute gloves and brooms.

Hey! Don't know if you guys saw/watch Law & Order: SVU, but they fictionalized the Pillow Fight in last night's episode (where they also fictionalized ImprovEverywhere's Frozen Grand Central mission). The only difference was that it was in Bryant Park instead of Union Square.

Pretty cool!

Had so much fun! Went to eat afterward and my friends and I left a trail of feathers in the restaurant! It was so worth the stares at the restaurant and on the train coming home - LOL

So much fun. I climbed the lamppost to the top and was getting it from all sides, man it was fun. It's cool to see myself on youtube, ha!

If you think this is something for kids, then you don't know how to have fun. More important things to do? Stop being such an "adult," you'll hurt yourself. Stop being so serious, you'll give yourself apoplexy. The simplest, silliest things can be the most fun, and it definitely wasn't only "hipsters" who were there: all types were participating. Just let loose for an hour, you'll be rejuvinated.

So if your day was inconvenienced, we are sorry for that, as it wasn't our intention. But we gave a lot of people fun and joy for a few hours, and that makes it worth it.

Hey Bastian,

Pillows need to be replaced once a year for hygienic purposes, and most feather pillows that are lying around people's homes are long overdue to be thrown away.

There are alternatives to feathers, but they are all petroleum-based, which means they are not biodegradable.

We spend hours making sure that all non-biodegradable material and no bottles, cans and flyers are left behind.

However, next year we are asking that people DO NOT bring feathers unless they pledge to clean up at least two pillows' worth before they go home.

Posted: 03:59 am [GMT] on March 25 2008

ok, fun idea and all, but do you HAVE to encourage people to spread dead animal parts all over new york city? yes, those lovely feathers from those fluffy pillows came from animals that lived tortured lives and died horrible deaths. why would you want to want to involve that in your fun event? even if you don't care about it, realize that you're subjecting thousands of people to it. regardless of your cleanup efforts feathers were all over the city, including throughout the union square subway station. completely disgusting. so have fun with poly fiber fill, won't you?

I wanted to add that I was unable to get there until about 5:45 pm (because I had theater tickets in Brooklyn that I had purchased about a day before I learned that 3/22 was the day of the pillowfight); but when I got to Union Square it was STILL going on! And next year I will be there from the beginning!

One of the most amazing things I have ever participated in. Sometimes you just need to let loose and have a good time, ESPECIALLY with so many serious problems in this world. And I for one don't mind my tax dollars going to clean up a few feathers I have spilled. Feathers over wars any day.

And for anyone who thinks this is a waste of time, why don't you go look up some pictures of the event and see the photos of hundreds of strangers smiling at each other. Nothing that causes so much joy on this scale is wasteful. Thanks for organizing this folks.

if I wanted to beat my friends, I wouldn't do it in union square surrounded by a bunch of permachildren. there's better things to do w/ your friends, both in public and in private, with or without pillows. But sorry for you, that's for grownups to enjoy. Maybe when you're a big boy (or girl)... Just remember that jacko loves pillow fights, too!

So very glad to hear you used "volunteers" to clean up the feathers... were those Sanitation workers "volunteering," or were those tax dollars giving up their free time? I was surprised to find the N/ R tracks covered w/ feathers and fill- what happened? couldn't you find any little hipsters willing to sweep up the 3rd rail? that would've been worth watching. Thanks for trashing Union Square. The rest of New York couldn't have done it without you.

God people lighten up. I did two things today I protesteds the war in iraq and I went to a pillow fight and the pillow fight was way more significant. It brought people together. It was so diverse and it was an opportunity to relieve some stress. Life sucks enough as it is can we not have some things to make it joyful without a bunch of tightwad bitter critics shutting us down.
I can't wait til next year this time I'm bringing 2 pillows.

You know... I'd say there's actually a pretty good cause... happy/fun/exercise/togetherness can always help millions of depressed minds and body. and the fact that it's done at a public space makes it easier for all kinds of people to participate (not just hipsters, not just kids...) which bridges the gap among us! It may contribute to lessening unnecessary everyday fights and crimes, too...

so... Human from the EV, I have a severe dust allergy and understand how tough it may be for you, but I hope you'll be forgiving to some good fun/cause and totally stay away from Union Sq around 3pm...

and to the organizers...
pillows for the homeless afterwards ain't a bad idea... don't you think?

Ron M from Staten Island

Posted: 09:21 pm [GMT] on March 22 2008

It was definitely a spectacle at union square today and I know it was a lot of fun but the world is in dire need of real meaningful participation by all of these same people to help stop the war, end capitalism, cleanup the earth and foster sustainable environmental practices. Grow up pillow fight people. There are more important things to do. leave pillow fights to children thats when I did it.

Peace everyone

As an East Village resident with a lung infection, this is nothing short of sadistic. Why must public spaces be used as the breeding grounds for hipster inanity? Couldn't you brilliant people come up with something meaningful, instead of just congesting major transportation hubs?

to answer some questions that just came up:

the pillow fight is THIS SATURDAY (the 1st saturday of spring) like it says :D

there has never been any issue with violence or injury at any pillow fight in any city that we are aware of- just think of how many enemies you'd have if you started actually attacking people!

there is no guestlist - please just show up with your pillow!

dee from New Yawk

Yes, we are still committed to putting on one free, all ages, public event every month!

We have added dance music events to our repertory because we realize there is a noticeable lack of good nightlife - and we like making fun happen :)

But you can always expect one free, all ages, public Newmindspace event a month, somewhere in North America.
