The Battle | Volunteering | Donations | The Afterparty

Not too long from now, in front of a museum that looks like a Jawa Sandcrawler, a battle of epic luminescence will break out between warring factions of Jedi and Sith. Defend the galaxy from darkness with UV lightsabers!

1,600 blacklight-reactive, meter-long cardboard tubes will be distributed in front of the Royal Ontario Museum, where there will be six massive blacklight cannons aimed at the crowd :) Wear a costume! The battle will continue until every tube is destroyed!

Volunteers needed: We will be moving the tubes by van on Friday around 7:00pm. Your help would be much appreciated! :) Come to 1153 Queen St. W around that time and give us a call (416) 875-4795. We will also need volunteers to begin cleaning up the tubes the moment they start to break. Trash bags will be provided.

Please donate. Our long-term goal is to be able to purchase plastic, extending, LED-lit, colour-changing lightsabers like these. Then we will have another battle just before Drum Circle starts up again, in the hopes that people will have pick-up lightsaber battles there! Please help us achieve this goal by donating a few bucks, either online or at the battle :)

Come party with us and DATAROCK at RANDOMLAND! After every tube is destroyed, we will ride the rocket together down to CiRCA and continue the fun :) Mark your attendance on Facebook.

The reduced admission list has been sent, but you may be able to grab some reduced passes at the lightsaber battle! See you there :)

Another event idea:

The living chalkboard. Each person comes to a location wearing black and at a specified time, with a piece of chalk you are encouraged to find a buddy and write a message or draw a picture on his or her clothes.

Hi everyone!

Here's an event idea: How about a balloon lift off? Each person brings a balloon to a specified location and they all get released at the same time.

I had heard it's earlier incarnations called the T.A.Z. (Temporary Autonomous Zone) movement, but perhaps the term "urban playground" is more accessible.

I just heard about the NY pillow fight and started reading from there. If you guys had something like this in Los Angeles, I would SO attend. We need more innocent, playful events like this around the world. People are WAAAY too uptight today and nothing brings out the kid in people than a pillow fight, capture the flag, or whatever else you can think of *super water balloon fight? Summer's around the corner*

Considering there were so few people organizing this, it was AMAZING! Can't wait for the next one.

I can't help but think under the CN Tower would be a good spot... easy to get to, and parking... I thonk it meets a lot of the criteria...

For future reference, a few of my friends and I all agreed that the stadium right next to the ROM would have been perfect. But I understand you need all these forms and renting and blahdeeblah, yes?

Alright, we can't do a park. I don't know why people are so hung up on parks, but any amount of litter in a park is unacceptable. And boring. It's gotta be on concrete.

And yes, all the tubes were recycled :)

Have you thought about putting this together with a chariety that way the donations would be tax deductable and you can get more media coverage and good karma?
An idea for a future place to hold this would be Christie Pitts.
And finally, did you recycle the tubes or did the paint make it impossible to do so?

Though it was a great idea, I have to say I was disappointed. I know the effort you guys put into your events and I commend you for it (most newmindspace events I've been to have been a blast), but this one tanked.
Most people did not get light sabers, the space was too small, and the position (infront of the ROM) was all wrong for the black lights. Too much residual light from the surrounding intersection killed the effect.
I KNOW you guys will do better next time, so keep up the fantastic ideas and I hope you now know what needs to be done to make that work.
keep rockin'
xx

p.s. to all those people just jumping and waving your sabers in the air .. WHAT were you doing? you're supposed to be attacking each other - not partying. Watch Star Wars next time! :P
