On a very frigid winter night in 2008, we attempted to create a string of bright lights that would be higher than the CN Tower. We didn't quite make it, getting about 500' into the air before the string snapped and our lights became a UFO.

Following “Night Lights (2006)” and “String of Diamonds (2007),” we thought it was time to tackle the highest goal: create an art installation that is higher than the CN Tower.

We have calculated the weight and we can definitely pull this off if the wind cooperates. Dress warm, fuzzy and illuminated :) Hot chocolate, glowsticks and Newmindspace t-shirts will be available.

TIME AND DATE

Saturday, November 22nd 2008 // 7pm – 11pm
University of Toronto, Front Campus, 15 King’s College Circle
<noindex>Facebook listing</noindex>

THE VIDEO

DIRECTIONS

Nearest subway: Queen’s Park.

Take the College streetcar to McCaul, which is just east of Spadina. Walk north through the University of Toronto gates and straight up the cobble street to a giant field.

“Keeping it hardcore, hour after hour
Taking you higher than the CN Tower”
-MC Jumper

OTHER STUFF

On the occasion of Barack Obama becoming the president-elect of the United States, we held a celebration in Toronto to mark the historic victory, and what we and Spacing saw as the return of the US to the international community.

If the event below appeals to you, go to the Facebook event page and join, and then invite all your people to join — especially if they’re in a different city. This is not an “organized” event — but we’ve been overhearing people asking “where will you be election night” so why not encourage a giant civic celebration?

If the rest of the planet could vote, Barack Obama would win the American 2008 election in an unprecedented landslide. It’s safe to say that much of the world is waiting anxiously for the Obama victory — think of the 200,000 people that saw Obama speak in Berlin last July.

The United States has lost moral support and sympathy around the world over the last eight years. The Obama win is a chance for a new start and to patch up both its reputation and its international relationships. We need to send a big fun signal of good faith that we’re ready to have them back. Let’s do that by gathering together in our public squares to celebrate this new era and show our American friends they are not alone in the world.

Here’s how it will work: When CNN declares victory (since it’s the news organization most internationally available) head to your city or town’s main square where public celebrations usually take place. If it’s a square with a big video screen maybe they’ll broadcast results so you can go early, or watch the victory speech after. Like when your sports team wins, it’s better to celebrate in public with everybody else.

In Toronto, head to Dundas Square. It’s got the space, those big TVs, and after every hockey championship, it is naturally filled with people.

Though planning this before results are in risks a “Dewey Defeats Truman” scenario (let’s all knock wood) it’s worth the risk. We may not agree with everything the United States does or even with all of Obama’s platform, but let’s put all that aside and, for once, celebrate America’s new start. Welcome back America!

Capture the Flag! Capture the Flag is a massive, adrenaline-pumping, urban game played on the streets of downtown Toronto. Two teams hide flags in their territory and attempt to capture the enemy flag using subways, streetcars, bicycles, longboards or their own two feet. Join us as we dash through the Financial District (the only ‘hood in T.O that doesn’t really have residences), evade the enemy, hide behind Toronto’s skyscrapers, travel through the PATH and score a point.

We were about to cancel the 2008 Queen of Hearts event due to an abundance of snow and wet sidewalks, but we realized we could actually spray hearts onto the snow instead!

Queen of Hearts is our sorta-annual event where we paint the town pink! In 2006, we used chalk paint and heart-shaped sponges to cover huge parts of the sidewalks of Queen St. W with little pink hearts. This year we’re hoping we can cover the snowbanks that line the sidewalk!

We will meet at the corner of Queen and John just before midnight, and distribute the block assignments, and spray hearts on the snowbanks.

Also, you could really help us out by bringing the following materials:

+ water
+ spray bottle
+ red tempera paint
+ plastic sheet with heart cut out of it

You can use a plastic file folder, a sheet of foam, a disposable plate, etc. All it needs is a hear-shaped hole in it and you’re good to go :) We will have a few extras. Bring some extras, too!
